DNS Lookup

List a domain's A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, SOA and CAA records in one lookup. Ideal for checking a site move, an email setup or a DNS change.

Guide

What is a DNS lookup?

DNS (the Domain Name System) turns names like example.com into the IP addresses of servers. Every time you open a website or send an email, its DNS records are looked up first.

Our tool queries your domain through the Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) and Google (8.8.8.8) public resolvers, so you see what the rest of the internet sees. Subdomains such as mail.example.com work too.

DNS answers are cached for as long as the record's TTL. If you've just changed a record and still see the old value, wait for the TTL to run out.

What the Record Types Mean

A and AAAA
The domain's IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. Your site is served from the server at these addresses.
CNAME
An alias pointing one name at another, typically used for www or a CDN.
MX
The servers that receive your email. The lowest priority number is tried first.
NS and SOA
The nameservers in charge of the domain, plus the zone's primary server, serial number and timers.
TXT
Text records such as SPF, DKIM, DMARC and Google/Microsoft verification.
CAA
Which certificate authorities may issue SSL for the domain. With no CAA record, any CA may.
TTL
How many seconds the record is cached. 3600 means one hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn't my DNS change showing yet?

The old record stays in resolver caches until its TTL expires. Nameserver changes can take up to 24–48 hours. Our tool queries public resolvers, so the result reflects what most of the internet sees.

What does an MX record do?

It tells other mail servers where to deliver email for your domain. A wrong or missing MX record means your email won't arrive.

How do I check my SPF and DKIM records?

SPF is the TXT record that starts with "v=spf1". For DKIM, look up the selector name, e.g. default._domainkey.example.com. For DMARC, look up _dmarc.example.com.

What does NXDOMAIN mean?

The name doesn't exist in DNS at all. The domain isn't registered, has expired or its nameservers aren't answering.

Can a name have both an A record and a CNAME?

No. If a name has a CNAME, it can't have any other record. That's why the root domain (example.com) uses an A record instead of a CNAME.
